Truck Company Runs Branchville Restaurant
APRIL 23, 2009 - Just before 0530 hours, Engine 811 was dispatched for a fire alarm and minutes later requested the box for smoke in the building at 4738 Cherry Hill Road (Hard Times Cafe).  Truck 812 was dispatched as the first due truck on the box.  Engine 811 and Truck 812 located the fire in the rear of the store, which was being controlled by a sprinkler system.  Engine 811 stretched a line to knock the rest of the fire, while Truck 812's crew performed the primary search of the building and laddered the roof for vertical ventilation.  Chief's 812B was assigned the interior.  Crews from Comapny 12 operated on the scene for about 90 minutes.


Thoughts and Prayers to Firefighter McGown
APRIL 9, 2009 -  The College Park Volunteer Fire Department wants everyone to keep Firefighter Danny McGown in their thoughts and prayers.  Firefighter McGown was critically injured while operating on a Kettering house fire.  Firefighter McGown is assigned to Fire Station 46 and has worked for the county for about four years. 


Child Safety Seat Check
APRIL 9, 2009 - The Beltsville Volunteer Fire Department and the Maryland Emergency Nurses Association are hosting a Child Safety Seat Check.  In an effort to reduce the almost 75% of incorrectly installed safety seats, the group will provide a free inspection and demonstrate the correct installation procedure for your model safety seat and vehicle. No appointment is required, citizens and residents are invited to the Beltsville Volunteer Fire Department at 4911 Prince George’s Avenue on Saturday, April 18, 2009, from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM.  For additional information about this event you may contact the Kids In Safety Seats information line at 800-370-SEAT.


Engine Runs Berwyn Heights Apartment Fire

APRIL 6, 2009 - Just minutes after the monthly company meeting had come to a close, Public Safety Communications dropped the box for the report of an apartment fire at 6164 Springhill Terrace.  Within minutes Rescue Squad 814 arrived on scene and reported nothing evident.  After further investigation, the crew discovered smoke coming from an apartment on the third floor.  Engine 812 arrived and secured Engine 835's water supply.  The crew advanced an attack line up to the third floor, assisted with primary searches as the line was stretched, and checked the attic for any extension.  The crew and all three chiefs operated on the scene for about an hour.





Engine Company Runs Riverdale Vacant

MARCH 29, 2009 - Around 0500 hours as Engine 812 was clearing an ambulance local, the box alarm was sounded for intersection of Madison St. and Baltimore Avenue in Company 7’s first due for the house on fire.  With Engine Company 807 already on the air investigating a report of smoke in the area, they quickly went on scene with a one story single family home fully involved.  Due to the home being vacant and being fully involved on arrival, defensive operations were called for.  Engine 812 arrived shortly after and dropped an additional supply line that was picked up by Engine 855.  The crew quickly advanced two 3” lines to side D of the structure and placed the portable deluge set in service to assist in knocking down a large volume of fire.  The crew from Engine 812 operated on the scene for just over one hour.  Chief 812B (Safety 801) had safety and Chief 812 assisted at the command post during the incident.





Transfer brings PIA with Entrapment

MARCH 27, 2009 - Soon after transferring to station 855 Ambulance 812B was alerted at 0207 hours for the PIA with entrapment on South-bound BW Parkway at Route 50.  Quint 822 arrived on scene at East-bound Route. 50 at South Dakota Avenue to find a 3 vehicle accident with an assignment from DC Fire and EMS already on scene.  Quint 822 and A812B were requested to standby and evaluate several patients.  DCFD Truck 15 completed the extrication and several patients were taken to area trauma centers.  A812B cleared at 0238 hours.

While E812B and A812B were at 855, Engine and Ambulance 812 ran a pedestrian struck across from the firehouse.  Medic 812 transported the patient to an area trauma center.  





Foam Company and Ambulance Run Riverdale Bus Vs. Train Accident

MARCH 26, 2009 - Just before 1630 hours Foam 812 was alerted for the report of a train accident at Queensbury Road and Rhode Island Avenue in Company 807's area.  Units from 807 arrived on the scene to find an accident involving 2 Metro buses and a MARC train.  While stuck on the tracks, one bus was struck by the passing train sending it into the second bus.  While only the driver of the one bus was on board, about forty people requested medical attention.  A812 was alerted as the 3rd BLS.  Ambulance 812 worked to triage and treat patients.  A812 transported 3 patients to Prince George's Hospital for minor injuries.  The Units from 812 cleared in just under 2 hours.





College Park Double Pulls On Second Alarm In Riverdale

MARCH 25, 2009 - Engine 812B was alerted for the fire task force at 1137 hours shortly after Engine 809 went on scene with a one story commercial building with heavy smoke showing.  Engine 812B arrived in staging and was directed to establish a third water supply for ladder pipe operations.  Engine 812B's crew assisted Truck 801 with setting up for ladder pipe operations, as well as setting up a portable monitor at the front door for defensive operations.  Engine 812 was placed on the second alarm however after a short time in staging was placed in service to run another reported house fire.  Engine 812B returned to service at 1411 hours.





Second Due Truck On Hyattsville Apartment Fire

MARCH 21, 2009 - Truck 812 was dispatched to 2708 Kirkwood Place for the apartment fire at 1103 hours.  Units from Comapny 1 arrived on scene and reported nothing evident.  Within minutes of their inital size up, Engine 801 advised communications that they had a fire in apartment 101.   Truck 812 arrived on scene and was ordered by command to check for extension and complete the primary on the 3rd floor with Chief 812 assigned as the interior.  Engine 801 made a quick knock of the kitchen fire in apartment 101 and there was no extension was found on the floor above.  Company 12 cleared in just under an hour.

Truck Runs Bunker Hill House

MARCH 20, 2009 - Just after 0830 hours, Truck 812 was alerted to a possible house on fire near 3707 36th Street in Bunker Hill.  Within minutes units from Company 9 arrived on scene to find light smoke showing.  Truck 812 arrived as the scene and established rapid intervention team.  Units on the scene found that the fire appeared to have originated in the basement and run up to the second floor through the bravo side of the house.  Units on the scene were able to get a quick knock on the fire.  Truck 812 operated on the scene after an hour.



Truck Company Runs 31 House

MARCH 8, 2009 - Around 0030 hours the box alarm was sounded for 4410 Josephine Avenue in Company 31’s first due for a report of a house on fire.  Units from Company 831 arrived with a two story single family dwelling with heavy fire through the roof.  Shortly after their arrival the working fire dispatch as well as the fire task force were requested.  Truck 812 arrived on scene a short time later and went to work with the exterior crew throwing multiple ground ladders to sides "C" and "D" and doing some outside vent work.  The interior crew helped to complete the primary search and performed extensive overhaul on Division two under the direction of Chief 812.  Chief 812B was assigned safety and Chief 812A also operated on the scene.  Units from Company 812 returned to service in about an hour and a half.

College Park Ambulances run Multiple Trauma PIA

MARCH 7, 2009 - At 2140 hours Company 811 was alerted to a personal injury accident in the intersection of Rhode Island Avenue and Route 193.  Engine 811 arrived on scene to find a two vehicle accident with significant damage and two unresponsive trauma patients.  A812 and A812B were alerted as the second and third due BLS units on the call.  A812 arrived and transported a pediatric trauma patient to Childrens National Medical Center.  A812B along with Medic 855 transported one of the adult traumas to Prince George's Trauma Center.  Units from Company 812 cleared in about an hour.

Truck 812 Runs 48 Apartment Fire

MARCH 5, 2009 - At 2039 Truck 812 was alerted as the second due truck to 9927 Good luck Road for the apartment fire. Engine 818 arrived on scene with smoke showing and a working fire on the terrace level.  Truck 812 arrived and was assigned to division three under the direction of Chief 812A. The crew performed primary search of several units on the third floor and opened up to check for extension. With a quick knock by the engine companies, the fire was contained to the apartment of origin and the assignment was scaled back.

MARCH 3, 2009 - Help keep your family and friends safe by encouraging them to adopt a simple lifesaving habit. When you turn your clocks back on March 8, make a lifesaving change in your household change the batteries in your smoke alarms. This simple habit takes just a moment, but is the best defense your family has against the devastating effects of a home fire.  Please pass the word along to your friends and family so that they, too, can make the simple change that could save their lives.




Truck Runs 48 Task Force

FEBRUARY 28, 2009 - Around 0400 hours Engine 848 came across channel 1 and advised of a possible house fire in the area of Cipriano Road and Second Street. Moments later they went on scene with a three story single family dwelling with heavy fire through the roof and requested the box alarm. A short time later command requested a fire task force to the scene.  This brought Truck 812 with six volunteers along with Chief 812B.  Truck 812 arrived and after checking in with command established the RIT on side “A”. While on scene the crew helped secure utilities and stood by before being released by command. Truck 812 operated for about an hour.

Engine and Three Chiefs on First Due Hazardous Materials Incident

FEBRUARY 27, 2009 - At approximately 1741 hours Company 12 was alerted to the Chemistry building at 91 Regents Drive for the investigation of a possible hazardous materials incident.  Upon arrival Chief 812 took command and E812 was sent to investigate the report.  Upon initial investigation E812 found that multiple acids had been mixed together by a student, which ended with an explosion in Wing Five of the building.  Crews on scene from surrounding companies and University of Maryland Police Department worked to evacuate the building and deny entry  Upon the arrival of the hazardous materials companies they began suiting up to go in and access the material.  Engine 812 worked with the hazmat teams to lead them into the hot zone.  Crews worked to take reading and stood by as backup teams while they neutralized the contaminated areas.  The contaminated area was turned over shortly there after to the University for clean up and companies returned to service around 2030.



Truck Runs Company 44 Apartment Fire

FEBRUARY 26, 2009 - Just after 2000 hours Truck 812 was alerted for a report of an apartment on fire at 5901 Knollbrook Drive in Company 44’s first due.  Paramedic Ambulance 844 arrived on scene to advise that they had heavy smoke and fire showing and needed the second alarm.  Truck 812 acting as the second due ladder truck was put to work by command on the second floor opening up the cockloft.  The exterior crew threw multiple ground ladders to side “C” while the interior team worked their way to the second floor.  Truck 812 operated on the scene for just over an hour performing extensive overhaul.

Truck Goes to Work in Riverdale

FEBRUARY 14, 2009 - Around 0540, hours members were awoken by a return from Engine 807 who was running a local alarm for smoke in the area of 4500 East West Highway. The engine reported a vacant two story single family dwelling at 4603 East West Highway with a working basement fire and requested the box alarm be filled. Truck 812 responded with seven personnel as the second due truck as well as the three chiefs.  On arrival the crew split with the outside crew throwing ladders and venting while the interior crew completed the primary search of the first floor. Crews in the basement got a quick knock on the fire however the fire had already extended to the first and second floor.  This brought a fire task force to the scene to help with overhaul.  For the duration of the incident, Chief 812A had division 1, Chief 812B had division 2, and Chief 812 assisted at the command post.  The truck returned to service shortly after 0800 hours.

Truck Company on Branchville Porch Fire

FEBRUARY 9, 2009 - Truck 812 was alerted for a report of a house on fire in the area of 9500 Rhode Island Ave.  Unit's from Company 811 arrived on scene with fire on the porch of a single family dwelling with possible extention inside the dwelling.  Engine 811 made quick work of the fire while the crew from Truck 812 checked for extention.  Truck 812  and the "B" chief cleared shortly after while Engine 811 remained on the scene for the investigators.




Truck Company Runs 31 House Fire

JANUARY 27, 2009 - At 0243 Truck 812 was alerted as the second due truck to Rosedale Lane in company 831’s first due for a report of fire in the basement. The truck responded with seven volunteers along with Chief 812 and Chief 812B. First arriving units reported nothing evident, however, quickly changed their return to a working fire in the basement and “level one operations” for all units.  Upon arrival the interior crew went to work on division one under the direction of Chief 812B completing a primary search and opening up. The exterior crew threw multiple ground ladders and did some outside vent work for crews in the basement.  The engine companies were able to put a quick knock on a small fire in the basement and the incident was held to one engine and one truck. Truck 812 operated on scene for just under an hour before returning to service.

Members Step It Up For Inauguration

JANUARY 20, 2009 - With no career staffing for the 19th and 20th, a total of twenty two members staffed the station.  The dedicated members were able to staff the engine and truck companies as well as two dedicated ambulances.  Along with the riding members several administrative members were able to come to the station to help with the cooking and administrative activities.  Despite low call volume the members were able to stay busy performing routine maintenance on the station and the apparatus.
