Students, Parents, & Fire Officials Advocate Campus Fire Safety on Capitol Hill

September 17, 2009 - Students, parents, and fire officials as part of Campus Fire Safety Month, headed by Ed Comeauconvened on Capital Hill to advocate campus fire safety issues with congressman and elected officials.  Campus Fire Safety Month has served as an incentive for schools across the country to reach out to their students and teach them the importance of knowing how to avoid having a fire or, if one should break out, what to do.  Each year there are thousands of fires both on- and off-campus at our nation's campuses, and it is critically important that students be made aware of their personal responsibility.  Below, the District of Columbia Chief Dennis Ruben and a CPVFD alumni, gives his words on Campus Fire Safety Month.

Now everyone can sleep free from the worry of fire, confident of waking when the smoke alarm sounds.

Conventional home smoke alarms typically warn people to the danger of fire through sound. That leaves deaf and hard-of-hearing people at high risk – especially while sleeping, because ordinary smoke alarms may not be jarring enough to awaken them.

Now, thanks to technology, deaf and hard-of-hearing people can be alerted to the danger of smoke and fire with SafeAwake—the "next-generation" of smoke alarm aids—designed especially for those who may not hear a conventional smoke alarm. The patented SafeAwake technology senses a standard smoke alarm and instantly: activates a motor-driven bed shaker, emits a high-decibel, low frequency audible signal, and flashes a white light.
