CPVFD Awarded FY2020 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG)
College Park Volunteer Fire Department Awarded FY2020 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG)
September 14, 2021
On September 3, 2021, the College Park Volunteer Fire Department (CPVFD) was awarded a Department of Homeland Security (DHS)-FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant. The purpose of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program is to protect the health and safety of the public and firefighting personnel against fire and fire-related hazards. The success of this grant was a combination effort led by Ron Benedict, former CPVFD member and owner of Fire Grants Expert, LLC.
CPVFD’s federal grant of $48,257.75 will allow for the much needed replacement of assorted hose, nozzles and appliances, most of which is nearly 20 years old and deployed from our fire engines. With the loss of this equipment due to age, along with damage sustained on incidents, we would not be able to replace all of this equipment without the assistance from this grant. Additionally, the CPVFD will look to purchase newer technology hose which is lighter, adding to the overall effectiveness and safety of the firefighters. This funding will also ensure our personnel have reliable and standardized equipment on both fire engines.
“Our first responders provide life-saving, critical care to Marylanders every day. This new federal funding will allow the College Park Volunteer Fire Department to replace outdated equipment to assist their efforts to keep the residents of College Park and neighboring communities safe.” said Senator Chris Van Hollen. “I appreciate the tireless work of the College Park Volunteer Firefighters to protect local residents, and I will continue working to secure federal resources to support those on the front lines.” The College Park Volunteer Fire Department is grateful to the City of College Park under Mayor Patrick L. Wojahn, and for the support of US Senator Chris Van Hollen and Congressman Steny Hoyer (Maryland 5th District), who have been avid supporters of the AFG grant program and the CPVFD.
